Concert king Martin Nievera wearing a black T-shirt designed by the late master rapper Francis Magalona sang the Philippine National Anthem last Sunday during the fight of Pacquiao & Hatton (Battle of East and West). As expected, everybody was glued on the television sets to watch it. That particular portion was very important to me, the singing of the Lupang Hinirang, I was afraid for the singer if he can sing it clearly and with the correct tone. (LOL!) Well, being the concert king and having performed in Las Vegas many times, we all expected that he will exceedingly performed well. He broke the tradition being the first male to sing our National Anthem.
But the National Historical Institute criticized his rendition because he sung with a martial tone but had a slow opening and closing.
Section 37 of the Republic Act No. 8491, also known as the 1998 Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, provides that "the rendition of the National Anthem, whether played or sung, shall be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe."
Republic Act 8341 punishes failure or refusal to observe the provisions of the code with public censure, which shall be published at least once in a newspaper of general circulation. The guilty person may be fined up to P5,000 or imprisoned not more than a year, or be meted with both penalties, at the discretion of the court.
In the past, the NHI criticized the incorrect singing of the anthem during international events such as sporting events that were aired over television and radio. The agency also criticized the renditions of singers Sarah Geronimo, Kyla, Lani Misalucha and Bituin Escalante during previous Pacquiao bouts.

Correct. Whoever or wherever, the Philippine National Anthem should be sang as it is.
Ganun so dapat he had to be fined P5,000 and be in jailed for at least one year with of course Sarah G, lani M, etc. I don't understand lang WHY they have to change the way it should be sang.
lagi naman silang ganun e, sila kaya kumanta? :)
ako naman, ok naman sa kin lahat e, ksi di ako magaling kumanta e! :)
basta nanalo si pacman, yun na yun!
I thought I already left my comment here. I think they should sing the National Anthem with the normal tune. Inaartehan pa nila, napapalpak naman!
Buti na lang panalo pa rin si Pacquiao!
